Soil Stabilization for Irrigation Canal Lining Using Spent Lime (1998)

Summary:

Failure of irrigation canal liners are somewhat common and result in costly repairs, water losses, soil erosion and potential safety hazards.
Soil lining in canals can be stabilized with various materials, including concrete, plastic, lime and bentonite.

This project tested soil stabilized with post-industrial lime, to determine if the lime would meet the strength and permeability requirements necessary to line an actual canal.

The tests performed demonstrated that soil stabilization using 20% Econolime™ per soil weight can enhance soil strength and provide acceptable permeability for use in irrigation canal lining for this soil profile (in eastern Washington).
