Assessment of Composting Options for the Woodland Park Zoo (1995)

Summary:

The Seattle Woodland Park Zoo's current method of composting of animal manure and bedding was evaluated for opportunities to improve general operational and process controls.

Three suitable composting technologies are feasible for the zoo;

  •  turned windrow (which is the current method);
  •  individual aerated static pile
  •  extended aerated static pile
  • Recommendations and implications of the three methods with respect to zoo operations are discussed.
