CWC Resource on Mandatory BLS Surveys

August 20, 2025

What's New

CWC has published a resource summarizing state laws that require employers to respond to specific surveys conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The resource should help employers understand when they are required to respond to such surveys.

BLS collects and publishes information about the U.S. labor market and economy. In collaboration with the states, BLS sends out requests for employers to participate in four reports: Annual Refiling Survey, Current Employment Statistics Survey, Multiple Worksite Report, and Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics Report.

These reports request a variety of employment data from employers, including information about wages, job titles, and location.

What It Means

While there is no federal requirement that employers participate in these data and information requests, some states make participation mandatory.

This resource helps CWC members understand which states mandate participation and the state penalties that employers could face for failing to respond.

What You Should Do

Members that receive requests to complete BLS surveys should use our new resource to check if the state requires employers to respond. Members with questions can contact CWC at [email protected].
