CWC has released a new resource highlighting recent enforcement actions by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) against employers who allegedly failed to provide religious accommodations as required by Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. In its press release titled 200 Days of EEOC Action to Protect Religious Freedom at Work, the agency emphasized its focus on enforcing Title VII protections for religious accommodations in the workplace. According to Acting EEOC Chair Andrea Lucas, these EEOC actions are “just a glimpse of [the] ongoing efforts to protect religious liberty in every American workplace.”
The EEOC’s press release reinforces a broader federal commitment to religious accommodations in the workplace, echoing similar priorities outlined in a recent memo from the Office of Personnel Management. Together, these actions signal the Trump Administration’s continued focus on accommodating employees’ religious beliefs across both public and private sectors.
With the EEOC prioritizing failure to accommodate claims, now is a good time for employers to review their religious accommodation policies and practices. The cases summarized in the CWC resource provide helpful context for understanding current trends and compliance risks.
