Trump Administration Expands Travel Ban, Pauses Immigration Benefits For 19 Countries

December 8, 2025

What's New

The Trump Administration has expanded its June 2025 travel ban to pause all immigration benefits – including employment-based visa petitions such as H-1Bs, green card applications, and naturalization applications – for individuals who are citizens of or were born in one of the 19 countries impacted by the ban. The expanded travel ban also triggers re-review of previously approved cases for those who entered the United States on or after January 20, 2021, and permits USCIS to extend review to those who entered before that date. Currently, the list of 19 countries is: Afghanistan, Myanmar/Burma, Chad, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela. Additional countries may be added.

What It Means

Employers who rely on foreign workers from any of the impacted countries will likely face immediate challenges because the recruiting of talent from these countries will be severely restricted. Employers may need to delay or withdraw pending offers, and employees from affected nations may be unable to renew visas or complete green card steps. Expect increased USCIS scrutiny, more Requests for Evidence, and possible work interruptions. Even cases unrelated to these countries may experience longer processing times due to resource shifts.

What You Should Do

Review your workforce for affected employees, assess pending immigration filings, and prepare for workforce disruptions. You should also advise employees from impacted countries to reconsider international travel because they could be barred from re-entering.
